Singham: Movie Review

July 22nd, 2011

singam-hindi-movie-ajay-devgan-walllpapersPicture this…a bunch of cops openly kick the shit out of a high-profile politician (perhaps the film takes the term ‘kick-ass’ entertainment a little too literally). The honest police protagonist gives an extensive emotional speech on how the entire police force has gone corrupt, which instantly awakens the conscience of cops from across the state including the DGP, all of whom come to Singham’s immediate rescue. A head constable on the brink of retirement mouths a monologue on how a police officer is supposed to be saviour of the society yet remains underpaid than janitor.

In a country already mired with multiple controversial corruption scams, where an average Indian remains a passive spectator, the implausible heroism of Singham attempts to exploit the suppressed sentimentality of the audience.

Bajirao Singham (Ajay Devgn) is an honest sub-inspector in his village with practically no case registered at his police station, since he solves most of them amicably. With a heart of gold, chest of steel and fists of iron, he qualifies as the elementary hero material. He just needs an excuse to flex his muscles and clench his claws, turning a one-man army at the drop of a hat, to battle an entire battalion of zombie-looking goons. The actual story initiates by the end of the first half when he clashes with an extortionist-cum-aspiring politician Jaykant Shikre (Prakash Raj) and a game of one-upmanship begins between the two.

An aftermath of the success of larger-than-life actioners like Wanted and Dabangg , Singham (officially remade from last year’s Tamil hit by the same name starring Suriya) is clearly devised as an out-an-out action flick for the original action hero Ajay Devgn. The focus is clearly on action and perhaps Rohit Shetty’s definition of full-blown action is his trademark blowing-up-cars phenomena. Jai Singh Nijjar’s action direction involving mortal combats and car chases is quite unimaginative on that front and it’s only thanks to Ajay Devgn’s intensity and physical authenticity that the fight sequences look kind of convincing.

The obligatory romance track involving Kajal Aggarwal is predictably boring. The heroine fulfils the prerequisites for an action film where she has to get molested once to give the hero a chance to show his heroism. A couple of redundant love songs later, love is hurriedly established between the couple. The idea of casting real Marathi actors doesn’t help much, since most of them are relegated to the backseat. And both Ajay Devgn and Prakash Raj who take the lead, struggle in forced Marathi dialect and accent.

Singham cashes in on the current scarcity of the once-popular hardcore action movie genre, which never relied much on the story but more on the constant clash between the hero and the villain. And like its genre, the film also brings back the vicious villain that has presently gone missing in most films. It’s the revival of the age-old formula! So it’s left up to Prakash Raj to firm up the film as a worthy opponent to the hero. And though the actor hams hysterically and repeats exactly the same act and character that he played in recent films like Wanted, Bbuddah Hoga Tera Baap or the original Tamil Singam , he is perhaps the only villain with an intentional humourous streak to him, which he brings out effectively every time in the climax. His unusual comic confrontation with the cops in the climax makes you laugh more than Rohit Shetty’s entire Golmaal series.

But beyond that, this film is not only devoid of a believable screenplay but it also lacks wit and humour. Even Ashok Saraf’s comic track seems forced for the effect. The film runs at ‘breakneck’ speed and attempts to overtake all loose ends coming out of its larger-than-life format. While the narrative isn’t much inventive, the constant clash between the hero and the villain in the second half don’t let you lose attention. And unlike most action films where the hero gains authority only towards the end, here he is poised with power through the runtime, thereby having a mass-appeal connect pretty early in the plot.

Ajay Devgn effortlessly revives his action-hero image and looks quite convincing in his role. Kajal Aggarwal doesn’t get much scope other than showcasing a constant smirk. Sachin Khedekar hams.Ashok Saraf is his usual self. Sonali Kulkarni is wasted. Ashok Samarth has a commanding presence as the villain’s sidekick. Prakash Raj is perhaps the only villain who would be credited for his amazing comic timing.

Ajay Devgn clenching his fists like a lion kind of reminds Mithun Chakravarthy doing a similar step, couple of decades back in a B-grader called Cheetah . Singham isn’t much different from that film either. If an exaggerated action film still excites you, then go Sing-ham!

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara Movie Review

July 16th, 2011

zindagi-na-milegi-dobara-movieExpectations, hopes and excitement were sky high. I had done this before; gone to watch a film having convinced myself that I would love it, just by its credentials. Let’s face it, Zoya Akhtar’s Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara qualified as a potential success in so many departments: three handsome men, two lovely ladies, a road trip, an exotic location… It seemed so well-padded it had to resist failure. The only thing that needed to be added to this otherwise perfect list was the ability to strike a chord with the audience. Could perfection be hit head on by an audience that wanted more?

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara is a story about three friends who comes together for one last road trip before one of them gives up on his bachelor status. Kabir (Abhay Deol) is all set to marry Natasha (Kalki) but, in true bachelor tradition, he and his friends, Arjun (Hrithik Roshan) and Imraan (Farhan Akhtar) organise a stag holiday to Spain which will see them reunite after a number of years. During the trip, the trio meet Laila (Katrina Kaif) who both Imraan and Arjun take an instant liking to and who goes on to bring a change to all of their lives. The trip sees the threesome take part in various sports, overcome old grudges and it also encourages them all to tackle their biggest fears individually.

It would be wrong to say that the film has a plot not seen before in Indian cinema. It would also be untruthful to state that, albeit with a recurring set of circumstances, it seeks to be something that it’s not. The Spanish touch seems to do wonders for the treatment of the movie. The colourful settings and the picturesque locations make the story come to life. Zoya Akhtar’s style seems to be stamped all over the vivid backgrounds and overall feel of the movie, especially if her directorial debut, Luck By Chance, is anything to go by. You can recognise and appreciate the somewhat subtle charm of the movie right from its first shot because of the romantic avatar and this is one thing the audience is sure to remember about Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara.

The casting of the film is also very much spot-on. Roshan, Akhtar and Deol seem to fit into their characters perfectly. The comical scenes are particularly effective and what seems to come through the most is the rapport the three must have shared with each other while shooting for the movie. Arjun’s character is not immediately one that you would have placed Roshan in, but he plays him with much dedication and passion. It is refreshing to see him play a character who isn’t instantly likeable, which is very much away from the norm for the actor. Akhtar’s performance as Imraan can be described in just one word: effortless. His comical timing, his spontaneity and his very obvious natural talent in giving a minimalist performance with maximum after-effect is evident in this film. Deol’s character, Kabir, is the one who takes the story forward. It is great to see Deol in such a role as he is by far one of Indian cinema’s most underrated actors. One hopes his undervalued acting talent won’t go unrecognised following this movie. Although the ladies, Kaif and Koechlin don’t have as much exposure as the leading men in the movie, both do their respective roles justice. Kaif is very much a breath of fresh air in her role as Laila.

znmdThe performances and scenery is only made better with the soundtrack of the movie which was composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. The picturisations of the songs are wonderful and each song is given it’s own flavour, which fits in with the overall theme of the movie as well as proving to good reflections on the individual characters. For example, ‘Senorita’ captures the very essence of the bachelor-party trip with Roshan, Akhtar and Deol not only seen to dance with a Spanish dancer, but they also lend their vocals to the celebration song. A special mention should also be given to the very sombre ‘Khaabon Ke Parinday’ which shows the enlightenment of Roshan’s character, Arjun. ‘Ik Junoon’ is also given an extremely innovative visual treatment as it is filmed with cast at the Tomatina Festival.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara is about love, life, friendship

July 11th, 2011

After enjoying a madcap image of youth in Delhi Belly, it’s time to take a fun-filled trip with another bunch of guys - Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar and Abhay Deol in the exotic locales of Spain in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, which releases on Friday. If city-centric Delhi Belly took a peep into the lives of a section of youngsters through three friends, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara too is an urban drama where three friends venture out to have some fun time together.
hrithik_and_katrina_in_zindgi_na_milegi_dobara
Directed by Farhan’s sister Zoya Akhtar and produced under the banner Excel Entertainment, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara is about a holiday that changes the lives of three best friends - Arjun (Hrithik), Imraan (Farhan) and Kabir’s (Abhay) forever. The film was previously titled Running With The Bulls but the name was later changed to the present one. It is the second directorial venture of Zoya after critically acclaimed Luck By Chance.

Kabir, a wealthy young man who works with his father’s construction company in Mumbai, is engaged to Natasha (Kalki Koechlin), daughter of a hotelier. Kabir wants to go on an extended bachelor party with his best friends Arjun, and Imraan, before he ties the knot with her and invites them to join him.London-based Arjun is a financial trader who works at a huge firm. As he grew up without a father and lived a tough life, so his entire focus is to get bigger, better and faster, while Imraan is a copywriter who works at an advertising agency in Delhi.

When Kabir offers to take them on a vacation, Imraan readily agrees, but Arjun is reluctant as he is too tied up in his work. However, after much cajoling he agrees and thus starts their Spain sojourn. All three meet up in Barcelona and set off on an adventure that helps them iron out their differences, get rid of their fears and alter their perception about various things in life. The holiday turns out to be a lesson in life for them and force them to break out of the box. The three-week journey changes their lives forever.

As luck would have it, Laila, played by Katrina Kaif, a bohemian fashion student from London is also there. She takes time off to teach diving every year and this time she decided to do it in Spain, where she meets Arjun, Imraan and Kabir. The mega-budget film has been extensively shot in Barcelona, Pamplona, Bunyol, Andalucia, Egypt and Mumbai.

The La Tomatina festival of Spain was re-created for the shoot of the song “Ik Junoon”. It was shot in Bunyol, Valenci, in Spain. Almost 16 tons of tomatoes were used for the shoot and were flown in from Portugal. The film has already created a lot of buzz with its songs and promos.

After a long time Abhay got an opportunity to work in a mainstream commercial film and it also gave him a chance to make good friends with his co-stars Farhan and Hrithik in real-life. While shooting for the film, the three did some adventure sports like skydiving and scuba-diving. Zoya has also made the three lead actors of the film sing a song “Senorita”, composed by trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, is a rage among people.

Always Kabhi Kabhi: The Review

June 18th, 2011

always-kabhi-kabhi-r-2

Credits:

Director : Roshan Abbas

Cast: Ali Fazal, Giselli Monteiro, Satyajeet Dubey, Zoa Morani,Mukesh Tiwari, Akash Khurana, Manoj Joshi, Satish Shah, Lilette Dubey, Vijay Raaz, and Navneet Nishan.

‘Always Kabhi Kabhi’, which is a follow-up of Roshan Abbas’s successful 1999 play ‘Graffiti’, turns out to be a bad candidate in the race of a spunky youth-based film, since it’s dull, loud, and only has less delectable amounts of euphoria.

The lovely school experience has a smart mix of fun, songs, enjoyable pool parities, updating and posting party pics on social networking sites, and clubbing.

On the whole, Shahrukh’s home production’s latest entertainment package unspools a fractured, laid-back tale that has too much stuff about the ongoing problems in a student’s school life that it doesn’t make for a feel good movie.

Predicted to be a sweet and spirited coming of age film, ‘Always Kabhi Kabhi’ barely charms you since the first part of flick emerges to be bane and there’s only a bit of excitement in certain strenuously cute classroom sequences.

The second half of this amateurish teeny booper looses vim and vigor and wards off to have a juvenile climax.

Incidentally, the other major foible in AKK is that to make the film unwittingly realistic, the director has brought in too many issues to address, from peer to parental pressure, which you would have earlier witnessed in films like ‘3 Idiots’ and ‘F.A.L.T.U’.

The director’s cinematic gift doesn’t turn out to be a wakeup call for neither teens nor parents, since these recurring issues in a student’s life has already been emphasized in many Indian films.

Cast and Crew
The background music that momentarily streaks in between is not a plus but jarringly irritating, and also SRK’s promotional video in the end turns out to be a complete shamble after the boring climax.

The film’s USP is the performances of Zoa Morani, Fazal, and Satyajeet, while Giselli Monteiro’s acting is shoddy and doesn’t radiate strength. AKK also has a strong supporting cast of Satish Shah, Lilette Dubey, and Navneet Nishan.

Storyline
The film yarns around four final year high school teenagers Sameer aka Sam (Ali Fazal), Tariq Naqvi (Satyajeet Dubey) and Nandini alias Nandy (Zoa Morani), and Aishwarya (Giselli Monteiro) studying in the fancy St. Mark’s convent.

Each of them has their own aspirations in life but unfortunately their parents want them to follow what they have planned for them.

The school topper Tariq’s father wants his son to get admission in MIT while Aishwarya’s mom forces her to miss school and get into the glam world.

The other teenager Nandy is a school brat and everyone envies her as she lives life on her own terms and craves for her parent’s attention, while Sam’s strict father never listens to him and doesn’t get along with him.

Incidentally, their relationships get strained and Sam eventually gets himself caught in a drug scandal and the cops demand bribe. To pay the police officers money, Sam wants to win the school drama competition.

In the end, these four perform a play to make their parents understand that they shouldn’t be pressurized by addressing their own problems.

Bottom-line
‘Always Kabhi Kabhi’ has nothing particularly endearing or funny but is terrible and a complete let down.

This mediocre fare might interest juvenile audiences, watch it if you have nothing else to do this weekend.

Bheja Fry 2 lives up to its name. Total bheja fry!

June 18th, 2011

bheja-fry-2 Film: Bheja Fry 2 (U)

Cast: Vinay Pathak, Minissha Lamba, Amole Gupte, Kay Kay Menon, Suresh Menon, Rahul Vohra and Aditi Govitrikar

Director: Sagar Ballary

Rating: Half a star

Sagar Ballary’s Bheja Fry (2007) had earned itself a decent following among fans of clean, unpretentious comedy with the dim-witted Bharat Bhushan (Pathak) and aggressive Rajat Kapoor anchoring it.

The first part’s success (a remake of French film Le Dîner de Cons) made way for Bheja Fry 2, whichbears the burden of frying the viewers’ brain on its utterly weak shoulders. Ballary took the title a bit too seriously this time. So serious, he forgot to add humour.

The premise of Bheja Fry 2 remains the same as its predecessor. Annoyingly talkative income tax officer Bharat Bhushan has kept alive his ‘purana sapna’ of cutting a music album of his own. Bhushan emerges as the winner of a reality contest which takes him on a luxury cruise where he meets industrialist Ajit Talwar (Menon).

Tax evader Ajit Talwar is convinced Bhushan is out to get him, while all the latter wants is to have a little fun on the ship. TV serial producer Ranjini (Lamba) is the only one who seems to see within the awful singer whose innocent, helping nature tends to put people off permanently. And that’s exactly what happens when Bhushan and Talwar are stranded on an island with no sight of life. Most of the film unfolds in the island.

Even Akshay Kumar’s dumbed-down pseudo comedies like Tees Maar Khan and Khatta Meetha look like masterpieces when compared to the insipidness of Bheja Fry 2.

Pathak’s act worsens as the film progresses, beginning as the lovable idiot and ending as one whose sight you cannot stand.

Look at the Menons in Bheja Fry 2 if you want to know what it is like to be caught in a bad marriage. No, no, they’re not married to each other in the movie. No matter how hard they work or well they play their parts, nothing can save this rancid pickle of a marriage with Bheja Fry 2.

Both Kay Kay and Suresh (tends to go overboard at times) and Govitrikar are decent and bearable. The cruise setting seems like Ballary’s gimmick to cover the lack of humour, intelligent dialogue, glaring holes in screenplay, story and everything a film’s made of.

It’s surprising to see someone like Gupte risk his credibility as a good filmmaker and actor with such frivolous roles.

Bheja Fry 2 lives up to its name, deep-frying your head with its bland existence two times over. Bellary has said in an interview that he wasn’t keen on Bheja Fry 3. Thank God for small mercies.

Anurag Kashyap considers GANDU a classic

June 15th, 2011

The film is not yet released in India but has been making waves elsewhere. The latest is that it has won the Grand Jury Award for a new director at the Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF). It was first shown at the South Asian International Film Festival (SAIFF), New York, and was also part of the Berlinale 2011 Panorama section. Its title has generated immense buzz and the low budget digitally shot film has reportedly done very well internationally. The filmmaker got a cash award of $2,500/- at SIFF alone. It has now found a great fan and supporter in India’s new age film icon Anurag Kashyap, who called it a classic and rued the fact that the film can never be released in India because of the CBFC’s (The Censor Board) archaic rules. He was speaking at the ‘Samvaad’ conference organised by CII and CBFC.
gandu
The film has graphic sex in terms of a scene where the film’s protagonist Gandu is shown masturbating. A Kolkata based director Q (Quashik) has directed it and if it has found support from an expected quarter like Anurag Kashyap, there are many who have grave doubts about the film’s cinematic value, including the one generally considered the most intelligent and cinematically literate among all the Bollywood Khans. Those who wish to watch the film on a wide screen will have to wait till October for MAMI’s Mumbai Film Festival that may probably include it in its programme. The festival has previously had a controversial film like ANTICHRIST by Danish filmmaker Lars von Trier to close its 2009 edition. That film too had graphic sex and extremely violent scenes.

Karisma Kapur makes 3D return

June 15th, 2011

karisma-kapurYummy mummy Karisma Kapur’s much- touted Bollywood comeback is finally happening. Vikram Bhatt has signed her up for his upcoming 3D film, Dangerous Ishq. The actress, in her mid- 30s, was last seen in the dud Mere Jeevan Saathi in 2006. Since 2003, when she married Delhi- based businessman Sanjay Kapur, Karisma had temporarily given up films for home and motherhood.

Bhatt’s film is a woman- centric horror film about past-life regression. The director says he was keen to cast Karisma and she too agreed to be part of his project immediately after hearing the first narration.

“Karisma liked the script and instantly said yes to Vikram. She has been keen to return in films but was not getting right script. In fact, offers started pouring in shortly after she gave birth to her daughter Samaira in 2005. Unfortunately, her personal life was going through a rough patch at that moment. Now that her son Kiaan Raj is a year old and things are on course in the home front, she feels she can devote enough time for work,” said a source.

The 3D format, sources said, was one of the chief reasons that interested her. “Karisma is excited about the 3D format and is also willing to try a new genre since she hasn’t done an out- and- out horror flick in her career spanning two decades,” said our source.

“Karisma was in fact willing to wait for the right project because she refused to accept offers of secondary roles, as many actresses who have crossed 30 get. Therefore she kept rejecting projects till date.

Doing television projects were convenient, so she opted for a few,” source close to the actress added.

Bhatt meanwhile is working on two 3D films after the success of Haunted. Apart from Dangerous Ishq, he also announced Raaz 3 in 3D recently. He is also slated to direct the sequel of Ram Gopal Varma’s Bhoot after that.

On Dangerous Ishq, Bhatt will soon finalise the rest of the cast. The film is likely to go on floors in September. The first schedule of shooting will take place in Rajasthan.

After marrying Sanjay Kapur in 2003, Karisma’s first attempt at a comeback was Tinnu Verma’s thriller, Baaz. The film however flopped.

After she gave birth to her son last year, there were rumours that she might not return to movies at all.

However supermom Karisma has proved everyone wrong and is all set to return in a fit and toned avatar with Bhatt’s film.

Guru

guru the poster

Mani Rathnam does it again – each movie of his, so different and fresh, all masterpieces. First Roja, Bombay, Dil Se and Yuva, now Guru, even though the audience has started to expect a lot from him, he comes through every time. His mastery as a filmmaker reflects throughout the movie.

Loosely based on the real life story of industrialist - Dhirubhai Ambani – this post independence setting is around the dreams and ambitions of a village lad.

guru film    guru movie still

Gurukant Desai is the son of a schoolteacher. He would earn good amount of money, than earn a higher education. Much to the disappointment of his father, he leaves home to work in Turkey. He returns to India after 7 years of work, as he would rather work for himself.

aishwarya in guru    abhishek bachchan in guru

He marries his friend’s sister, who has been jilted in love. He is practical about it as the dowry she would bring would be a stepping-stone to expand his business. He uses loopholes in the system to make big bucks.

abhishek in guru

Abhishek Bachchan is very convincing in his portrayal of Gurukant; he makes you forget that he is an actor and not actually the character. This is definitely his best performance till date. At times there is a feeling of deja’vu when you see him in the court scenes. You are reminded of the likes of Vijay Dinanath Chauhan – in Agnipath.

Aishwarya has done a better job in the second half of the film. She is too polished to make a convincing village belle.

guru movie

Mithun has done an excellent job. Madhavan, Sachin Khedekar, and Manoj Joshi have all performed very well.

Mallika has excelled in her sizzling dance number, but Vidya Balan was wasted, as she hardly had any screen space.

The music by A R Rahman was outstanding, makes you affirm that he is the best music composer in India. The cinematography was excellent.
