Boys used to call me Soda: Anushka Sharma

July 28th, 2011

anushka_sharmaSimi Garewal’s show is always in news for some reason or the other. Simi’s show Simi Selects India’s Most Desirable is being talked about as actors like John Abraham, Deepika Padukone, Ranbir Kapoor and Abhay Deol have confronted about their real selves and personal relations.

This week’s episode has Bollywood’s sexy siren Anushka Sharma as the guest.

She spoke about her school days besides her life and career. Anushka said, “Boys used to call me Soda in school days. Soda means serving officers daughters association. I miss those days when I had a very protected life one could get close and bond with other army people that they gradual would become your extended family.

Even today I could be stranded in any part of the country be it a small city, town or district. I just have to find the closest army cantonments and I’ll be at home. When I see an army uniform, I feel so happy.”

Well we wonder if your ‘close friend’ Ranveer Singh likes to call you by this name!

No comparisons with Rajnikant please: Salman Khan

July 22nd, 2011

salman-bodyguardGiven Salman Khan’s mass appeal, his co-star of Bodyguard Kareena Kapoor and many others in B-Town believe that Salman is the only phenomenon in Bollywood who matches the charisma of Rajnikant whose mass appeal surpasses all logic.

“He’s a natural born actor. Whatever he does becomes a craze. To me, he’s the Rajnikant of Bollywood,” said Kareena recently. And many others echo these sentiments. But our brawny superstar doesn’t want any comparisons with Rajnikant perhaps because of the fear of getting slotted. “Main jahan hoon wahan theek hoon. Unki apni jagah hai aur meri apni,” (Rajnikant has his own place and I have mine.

I am happy in my space) said Salman at the trailor launch of his upcoming Bodyguard. And he didn’t sound modest this time. Is it because drawing comparisons with the Southern super star may not do much for him since his success rate currently is very high. Then in a recently conducted contest on style quotient, reports are that it was the cool dude Salman Khan who won hands down with an astounding vote of 76percent, whereas Shahrukh Khan who had been voted second managed to get 16 percent of the votes. But, surprisingly, Rajnikant, just about got 10 percent of the votes. Guess Salman has now learnt to be shrewd.

Saif and Raghavan at loggerheads

July 22nd, 2011

saif-ali-khan-house-e28093-abodes-of-actorsIt is believed that Saif has creative differences with director Agent Vinod director Sriram Raghavan.

It seems Saif is following Aamir Khan. The actor who turned producer with Love Aaj Kal seems more interested in direction than being a producer. According to an unit hand the actor had some creative differences with his ‘Agent Vinod’ director Sriram Raghavan .

It is believed that the actor wants Agent Vinod to be a complete Bollywood entertainer while director Sriram Raghavan has a different vision. “The actor tried to explain his views to Raghavan and failed as Raghavan knows his job well,” informs the source.

Saif has given in to Raghavan’s vision, but isn’t fully convinced. It is also believed that the actor and the director are not on talking terms. ‘Agent Vinod’ is a spy thriller in which Saif and Kareena play the main leads.

As we all know how Saif is a very strict producer and successfully kept everything under wraps. He is looking forward to a November release. Let’s hope Saif sorts out differences with Raghavan before the release of his ambitious ‘Agent Vinod’.

After Sonam Kapoor, Ajay Devgn gets Sonakshi Sinha

July 22nd, 2011

ajay_picAjay Devgn is already moved onto his next project much before the release of Singham. He is all set to pair up with Sonakshi Sinha for Ashwini Dheer’s film titled - Son Of Sardar. The film will be jointly produced by Devgn and NR Pachisia.

A source informed Mumbai Mirror, “Ajay is one of the most bankable stars in Bollywood today. After his recent spate of successful films, he is looking forward to work with younger heroines. He has already worked with Kajal Agarwal in Singham and will be working with Sonam Kapoor in Vishal Bhardwaj’s next.

He has recently signed up for Ashwini Dheer’s SOS - Son Of Sardar opposite Sonakshi Sinha as well. After a long gap, he will be working with his old friend NR Pachisia. It was Pachisia who had given Rohit Shetty a break in Zameen in which Ajay Devgn had played the lead role.”

Another source said, “After the success of Dabangg, Sonakshi has entered the big league of actresses in the industry.

She signed the Ashwini Dheer film only yesterday. It is a remake of south Indian super hit Maryada Rammana and is a love story. The film is based in Punjab and going by the title, it is sure to generate quite a few eyeballs.”

When contacted NR Pachisia said, “It is a fresh pairing. Both Ajay and Sonakshi are intense actors and they will surely create magic on screen. Considering it is an action packed love story, we decided to cast a fresh face opposite Ajay. We try to do different things with our projects every time in terms of casting. I am now looking forward to start the film early next year.”

Salman Khan’s Bodyguard to unveil first look of his film

July 22nd, 2011

salman-khan-body-guard1For 15 years, he has willingly risked his own life and vowed to take a bullet for Salman Khan. And now, the actor is paying him back his dues. Deciding to take a back seat himself, Salman has asked his real life bodyguard Shera to unveil the first look of his film Bodyguard at a Juhu multiplex, this evening.

It all started with Salman suddenly approaching Atul Agnihotri (producer of Bodyguard), with his new concept. Though Agnihotri was sceptical at first, he reluctantly agreed to Salman’s terms. Shera was caught off guard by the overwhelming offer from the star.

It took quite a while for Shera to get a grasp of the situation. When he got hold of his nerves, he told Salman that it is indeed an honour for him, and he shall fulfill Salman’s wish.

Though it comes as a surprise to Shera, this surely isn’t the first time that Salman has decided to take care of his bodyguard. Previously, Salman Khan turned down a whopping Rs 7 crore offer to wear a certain security company’s uniform in Bodyguard. Instead he opted for his own personal bodyguard’s brand.

When contacted, Shera told Mumbai Mirror, “I couldn’t believe it at first. It felt surreal. I had to pinch myself to make sure that this indeed was real. Salmanbhai’s wish is my command.

Salmanbhai has always taken care of me and this gesture just proves that how great a human being he is. He is family to me. I owe everything to him.”

Singham: Movie Review

July 22nd, 2011

singam-hindi-movie-ajay-devgan-walllpapersPicture this…a bunch of cops openly kick the shit out of a high-profile politician (perhaps the film takes the term ‘kick-ass’ entertainment a little too literally). The honest police protagonist gives an extensive emotional speech on how the entire police force has gone corrupt, which instantly awakens the conscience of cops from across the state including the DGP, all of whom come to Singham’s immediate rescue. A head constable on the brink of retirement mouths a monologue on how a police officer is supposed to be saviour of the society yet remains underpaid than janitor.

In a country already mired with multiple controversial corruption scams, where an average Indian remains a passive spectator, the implausible heroism of Singham attempts to exploit the suppressed sentimentality of the audience.

Bajirao Singham (Ajay Devgn) is an honest sub-inspector in his village with practically no case registered at his police station, since he solves most of them amicably. With a heart of gold, chest of steel and fists of iron, he qualifies as the elementary hero material. He just needs an excuse to flex his muscles and clench his claws, turning a one-man army at the drop of a hat, to battle an entire battalion of zombie-looking goons. The actual story initiates by the end of the first half when he clashes with an extortionist-cum-aspiring politician Jaykant Shikre (Prakash Raj) and a game of one-upmanship begins between the two.

An aftermath of the success of larger-than-life actioners like Wanted and Dabangg , Singham (officially remade from last year’s Tamil hit by the same name starring Suriya) is clearly devised as an out-an-out action flick for the original action hero Ajay Devgn. The focus is clearly on action and perhaps Rohit Shetty’s definition of full-blown action is his trademark blowing-up-cars phenomena. Jai Singh Nijjar’s action direction involving mortal combats and car chases is quite unimaginative on that front and it’s only thanks to Ajay Devgn’s intensity and physical authenticity that the fight sequences look kind of convincing.

The obligatory romance track involving Kajal Aggarwal is predictably boring. The heroine fulfils the prerequisites for an action film where she has to get molested once to give the hero a chance to show his heroism. A couple of redundant love songs later, love is hurriedly established between the couple. The idea of casting real Marathi actors doesn’t help much, since most of them are relegated to the backseat. And both Ajay Devgn and Prakash Raj who take the lead, struggle in forced Marathi dialect and accent.

Singham cashes in on the current scarcity of the once-popular hardcore action movie genre, which never relied much on the story but more on the constant clash between the hero and the villain. And like its genre, the film also brings back the vicious villain that has presently gone missing in most films. It’s the revival of the age-old formula! So it’s left up to Prakash Raj to firm up the film as a worthy opponent to the hero. And though the actor hams hysterically and repeats exactly the same act and character that he played in recent films like Wanted, Bbuddah Hoga Tera Baap or the original Tamil Singam , he is perhaps the only villain with an intentional humourous streak to him, which he brings out effectively every time in the climax. His unusual comic confrontation with the cops in the climax makes you laugh more than Rohit Shetty’s entire Golmaal series.

But beyond that, this film is not only devoid of a believable screenplay but it also lacks wit and humour. Even Ashok Saraf’s comic track seems forced for the effect. The film runs at ‘breakneck’ speed and attempts to overtake all loose ends coming out of its larger-than-life format. While the narrative isn’t much inventive, the constant clash between the hero and the villain in the second half don’t let you lose attention. And unlike most action films where the hero gains authority only towards the end, here he is poised with power through the runtime, thereby having a mass-appeal connect pretty early in the plot.

Ajay Devgn effortlessly revives his action-hero image and looks quite convincing in his role. Kajal Aggarwal doesn’t get much scope other than showcasing a constant smirk. Sachin Khedekar hams.Ashok Saraf is his usual self. Sonali Kulkarni is wasted. Ashok Samarth has a commanding presence as the villain’s sidekick. Prakash Raj is perhaps the only villain who would be credited for his amazing comic timing.

Ajay Devgn clenching his fists like a lion kind of reminds Mithun Chakravarthy doing a similar step, couple of decades back in a B-grader called Cheetah . Singham isn’t much different from that film either. If an exaggerated action film still excites you, then go Sing-ham!
